An original design for the Korean War, it would prove to be an excellent short-range interseptor. A "slow-powered" afterburner, small, and light weight allowed it to preform against any craft at the time. Prototypes were launched as early as 1956. And a final design was decided upon late in 1956. It proved to be an asset to the Korean war, and also saw some action in Vietnam when it was sold to the Viet-con. The MiG-21 had many purposes incluing reconnaissance, and bomber, but mostly served the role of fighter.
